Campgrounds on Norris Lake, Tennessee

Norris Lake, surrounded by the east Tennessee mountains, is one of the premier destinations in the Tennessee River Valley. With more than 800 miles of shoreline, it's the largest lake in the valley. Water sports abound, including swimming, water skiing and boating. There are several marinas on the lake, and rental boats are readily available. Fishing for walleye, bass and rock fish is popular, and guided charter fishing excursions, including night fishing, are offered by several local outfitters. Landlubbers will find hiking and biking in nearby state parks.

Norris Lake was the first and is one of the largest lakes in the TVA system. The lake extends 73 miles up the Clinch River and 56 miles up the Powell River. The reservoir is a total of 129 miles long with many secluded coves where there are either campgrounds or primitive camping is allowed, unless posted otherwise. The state has two game management areas, three state parks and 59 public access areas, and there are three county parks. The TVA still owns some of the land for future recreational development.

Try a different type of camping on a houseboat on Norris Lake.

The Cedar Grove Marina and Campground is just one marina facility that rents houseboats. Its large houseboats are luxurious, with six bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen, AC generator, gas grill on the deck, water slide and much more. The houseboats may be rented for a weekend, midweek or the entire week. Boat rentals are fairly common on this large lake. You may rent pontoon boats, ski boats, canoes and Jet Skis.

Norris Dam

Norris Dam State Park is the largest park at the lake, and the dam itself as an attraction. The park has two campgrounds, with 25 sites east of the dam and 50 sites on the west side. The sites have grills and tables as well as water and electric hookups.

There are some primitive camping areas around the dam, and some group areas. Reservations are not taken for individual sites, but are required for group areas.

The Village Green Complex, at the dam, has a recreation center with badminton, basketball, horseshoes, volleyball and a playground. This campground also has a museum with a grist mill and a threshing barn from the 1800s. Norris Dam State park is also only a few miles from Interstate 75.

Big Ridge

The Big Ridge state Park, near Maynardville, was one of the demonstration parks created by the TVA. The Civilian Conservation Corps also built many of the structures still standing and in use at the park. Although there is a lot of lake to explore, and many miles of trails, there is a focus on the heritage of the lake here. There is a lot of history here, and you might see remnants of communities that were inundated by the creation of the lake.

The campground has 50 campsites with full hookups that may be used by RVs or tent campers. Bathhouses, showers and restrooms are available. There are two group camping areas available by reservation. This park also has back country camping at three designated sites. A free permit is required. Cabins also are available.

Cove Lake

Cove Lake State Park is the smallest of the state parks at 675 acres but has the largest and most developed camping facility. It is also in a fairly remote area at the north end of the lake with scenic nature and bike trails through the heavy woodlands. The Devils Race Track, which is a steep pinnacle rock formation that can be climbed for a great panoramic view, is located in the park.

This park has 100 campsites and all have water and electric hookups. Sites also have grills and tables. A dump station, showers and restrooms are available. Tents may be used on all sites as well as RVs.

You may rent pontoon boats, paddle boats and canoes, but you cannot bring your own boat.

Private Campgrounds

The Beach Island Resort and Marina is typical of private camping facilities at the lake. There is a full marina where you may gas up your boat or rent a boat for a day or a week. Houseboats are available as well.

The RV Campground has full hookups, and daily, weekly and seasonal rates are available. Cable TV and Wi-Fi are included in your rental. The site has about 100 campgrounds. RV supplies and parts also are available.

Cabins along the lake may also be rented.

County Parks

The Anderson County Park is one of three county parks on the lake. This park has 56 RV sites with full hookups on the lake. Tent sites have electricity and water available. There are bathrooms and sewer stations.

The park has boating, fishing, a swimming area, playgrounds and hiking trials. The Anderson County Park is on a peninsula at about midpoint of the lake.
